Staff Sgt. Donald L. Munn II of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, is a 2000 graduate of Lake Shore High School.  He attended Western Michigan University for a year before joining the United States Army.

Donald was eager to defend his country. He had been in the military for five years serving as a Military Policeman. While in Germany, he met his future wife where they both were stationed together.

Donald was currently serving his second tour in Iraq and he had been scheduled to come home in October 2007, but his tour was extended to February of 2008. He died at age 25 in Baghdad of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near his unit.

He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart for his service in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Munn was leading his platoon on a mission when he sensed something was wrong and tried to get all of his men out safely, said Dorothy Richards, his grandmother. She said Munn was the last to leave when the bomb exploded.

I remember when I was stationed in the 554th MP Company and was working with Spc. Munn (at the time). He was one of those guys that even though he was younger than me you couldn’t help but look up to him and watch what he was going to do next. To know that he became a SSGT in the Army is no surprise to me. He will be missed and my prayers go out to you Mrs. Munn (Salvador)as well as your pretty little girl that looks both like you and your husband.

He will live on in all our hearts and will also shine through his daughter. I know that I wasn’t real close to Munn but I feel I was close to you (Salvador). To hear the good news about your marriage and daughter really made me smile! Then to hear the worst news made me realize that we are all human even if we resemble more of a hero that is invincible.

SSGT Munn please help watch over the rest of your men since that is what you were doing when you decided to leave us and join another Army in Heaven. The Lord is lucky to have a guy like you on his team. You will be missed but never forgotten! You are a Hero to all of us who know you from the 554th as well as your recent unit. I thank God that I had a chance to meet you and your wife. My prayers and thoughts are with your family!

I am one of SSG Munn’s former commanders, from his time in the 554th MP Company, WARDAWGS, in Boeblingen, Germany. He was a fantastic troop.

He came to our unit pretty green, straight out of Advanced Individual Training.

He learned quickly and was recognized as a good troop to be sure. When he was in our company he was a Private First Class and a Specialist.

That was four years ago. I can only imagine what a great man, great non-commissioned officer and father and husband he had become.

His wife and daughter need to know that he was a great man.

The world is a poorer place in his absence.
