Lance Cpl. Nicholas A. Miller of Silverwood, Michigan was a shy, quiet kid who could not be dissuaded by family members from signing up for the Marines. He went into basic training shortly after graduating from Marlette High School in 2005.

He was trying to find his place in life and was determined to join the Marines. That was something that made him proud and happy. He loved to play paintball, hunt deer and ride all-terrain vehicles. The day before he died, Nicholas told his mother he loved and appreciated her in an e-mail.

No one in Nicholas A. Miller’s family had spoken to him since he left for Iraq, but he sent e-mails regularly. One message resonated deeply back home. In an e-mail to his grandmother, he said being over there reminds him of just how important family is, said Miller’s uncle, Ron Pincumbe. He said, ‘I love you and miss you all.’

LCPL Miller loved to play paintball, hunt deer and ride all-terrain vehicles. Pincumbe said Miller’s proudest moment was when he shot a deer while hunting with his grandfather in 2001.
